The Hong Kong government is considering turning Hong Kong into a vibrant Wi-Fi city, where mobile users may access the Internet through Wi-Fi connections anytime and anywhere. With the popularity of Wi-Fi services in the world, in order to stay competitive in business and promote our Hoing Kong as a technologically advanced city, offering ubiquitous wireless access is of utmost importance.
Based on our fruitful research results over the past years and our strengths in system development, we develop SmartMesh, a wireless mesh that offers pervasive wireless access without the need for modification of clients and access points (APs). The core of the development is a mesh point that, through our dynamic routing and load-balancing mechanism, effectively extends the wireless LAN coverage and improves its throughput. Our mesh points are wireless-based, can be put anywhere in a Wi-Fi network without the need of "cable pulling", and are fully self-configured and "plug-and-play". The mesh points will be made available to both service providers and consumers. The project will be an important step for Hong Kong to become an important wireless hub and Wi-Fi city.
